چکیده

T he purpose of this article is twofold: First, it will demonstrate the clinical application of precise control of t,he magnitude, direction, and duration of extraoral force and, second, cases will be presented to demonstrate how control of these three mechanical variables dramatically increases the efficiency and effectiveness of extraoral force in the treatment of malocclusion. The subject will be introduced by showing a case (Case 1) in which 44 ounces of bilateral extraoral force was applied in a precise and predictable direction 24 hours per day for 97 days (Fig. 1). The patient was 11 years 5 months of age at the beginning of treatment; dentally, she was in the late mixed-dentition stage. She had an ANB angle of 6 degrees, a Frankfort-mandibular plane angle of 32 degrees, an end-to-end molar relationship, 11 mm. of overjet, and a slight open-bite. There was adequate space in the lower arch. The appliance consisted of edgewise bands on the upper and lower incisors and first molars, The objective in the lower arch was to round out the flattened arch form, to move the incisors slightly labially, and to maintain arch length (Fig. 1, P). The objective in the upper arch was to simultaneously move the upper first molars and four incisors distally and bodily, as a unit, by applying '(heavy " continuous, directional, extraoral force. A 0.021 by 0.025 inch edgewise wire was used to control the incisors. Eleven days after banding, the extraoral force was applied. Fig. 1, A through H, demonstrates the predictable change. The original models were taken 355 months before treatment began. Except for normal tooth eruption, the malocclusion remained essentially the same. Progress records taken after 97 days of controlled extraoral force show a normal molar relation and elimination of the 11 mm. of overjet.

An evaluation of extraoral combined high-pull traction and cervical traction to the maxilla.

The effects of extraoral combined high-pull traction and cervical traction of known duration (mean, 122 days) and magnitude (2.5 to 3 pounds total per side) were studied by means of serial lateral cephalometric head films of thirty patients. The lateral cephalometric head films used were taken at three different times: before the extraoral force was applied, after the prescribed period of conti...

Combining of Magnitude and Direction of Change Indices to Unsupervised Change Detection in Multitemporal Multispectral Remote Sensing Images

In remote sensing, image-based change detection techniques, analyze two images acquired over the same area at different times t1 and t2 to identify the changes occurred on the Earth's surface. Change detection approaches are mainly categorized as supervised and unsupervised. Generating the change index is a key step for change detection in multi-temporal remote sensing images. Unsupervised chan...

Does a basic deficit in force control underlie cerebellar ataxia?

Because damage to the cerebellum results in characteristic movement incoordination known as "ataxia," it has been hypothesized that it is involved in estimation of limb dynamics that occur during movement. However, cerebellar function may extend beyond movement to force control in general, with or without movement. Here we tested whether the cerebellum is involved in controlling force separate ...

Application of linear and nonlinear vibration absorbers for the nonlinear beam under moving load

Recently, a large amount of studies have been related to nonlinear systems with multi-degrees of freedom as well as continuous systems. The purpose of this paper is to optimize passive vibration absorbers in linear and nonlinear states for an Euler-Bernoulli beam with a nonlinear vibratory behavior under concentrated moving load. The goal parameter in the optimization is maximum deflection of t...

Investigation of unbalanced magnetic force in permanent magnet brushless dc machines with diametrically asymmetric winding

The purpose of this paper is the calculation of Unbalanced Magnetic Force (UMF) in permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBLDC) machines with diametrically asymmetric winding and investigation of UMF variations in the presence of phase advance angle. This paper presents an analytical model of UMF in surface mounted PMBLDC machines that have a fractional ratio of slot number to pole number. This model...
